About The Practice

Small and friendly

Crocus Medical Practice is a local friendly practice operating from two sites about 4 miles apart - Saffron Walden Community Hospital site, Radwinter Road, Saffron Walden and High Street, Great Chesterford.  All our clinical staff and receptionist/dispensers work at both sites and all patients are welcome to attend at either surgery.  Our computer systems and telephones are linked.

Patients are people

We are interested in our patients as people and aim to take into account their circumstances, families or any other problems which could affect their response to illness. We also strongly believe in the personal doctor/patient relationship and the continuity of patient care. In this respect you should always be able to see the doctor or nurse of your choice although you may have to wait longer for an appointment with him/her.

Accommodating staff

The practice consists of eight GPs, one Registrar, one Nurse Practitioner, two Paramedics, five Practice Nurses, three Health care Assistants, and a phlebotomist as well as two Practice Managers, and an Assistant Practice Manager; receptionist/dispensers and an administrative team.  All our staff believe in patient care and will go out of their way to assist wherever possible.

Education and training

We strongly believe in education and are an accredited training practice. We welcome our trainee GPs (Registrars) who are qualified doctors undergoing specific extra training to become GPs of the future. They are with us for 6-12 months at a time. We encourage and support all our staff to achieve further qualifications/ competencies and also teach medical students for short blocks, during the year, in general practice.

Health services - reactive and pro-active

We offer a full general practice service. As well as treating illnesses, we are proactive in the management of chronic diseases, such as asthma and diabetes, and in encouraging our patients to reduce the risk of future health problems.  We work very closely with our Community Staff and have a visiting dietitian and counsellor.

Dispensing services

We are a dispensing practice which means that we are able to dispense medication to any of our patients who live more than a mile (1.6km)from a chemist.

Our Dispensaries are closed between 1pm-2pm Monday - Friday

Availability of appointments

We have pre bookable appointments up to four weeks in advance; On Line bookable appointments; On the Day appointments and Urgent on the day appointments.  Appointments are available with our Doctors, Registrars, Nurse Practitioner, Paramedic Practitioners and Physios.  Our receptionists will help direct to the most appropriate Health Care professional.

Research

We actively promote research opportunities to our patient population. We are accredited as a RCGP Research Ready site and are currently undertaking diabetes, cardiology and endocrine research studies.
